The Quiet Site, Ullswater

The Quiet Site on Ullswater is one of our favourites. We have been visiting since first having kids and it is an ideal site for out of season months. Even though the site is on a hill, all pitches are level and hardstanding with plenty of greenery. Staff are always friendly and available to guide you to a pitch. It is also the most eco friendly holiday site we know. It is worth reading about their journey to be carbon neutral.

This time Steve booked a hobbit hole for my birthday. It was a special treat and felt luxury with it being a colder month.

The hobbit hole was well insulated and larger than expected. It also had a kettle, fridge, microwave, heater, toilet and washbasin. The large sleeping ledge was huge, and the kids had plenty of room to jump around and play.

We drive to the Lake District after work on a Friday, so usually order pizzas from the Quiet Bite after arriving. They have a standard menu and usually have a special which changes regularly. This time we shared a Margherita, Garlic Bread and Ham and Mushroom. We took them over to the pub (The Quiet Bar) and there were no leftovers.

The kids love The Quiet Bar and it reminds us of the Hogs Head from the Harry Potter films. The building dates back to the 16th century and has an amazing atmosphere. The stone walls have some lovely artwork displayed and plenty of old taxidermy to keep Sam occupied. In the centre is a huge log fire. Our favourite place to sit is up the back stairs in the corner. We will take a few books and toys for the kids, and we get to have a few drinks. This time Sam discovered the air hockey table in the playroom. It is a new favourite.

Our night was comfortable and warm. I was first up and opened the door. You can’t beat a morning view in the Lake District. Even though it was chilly, we had breakfast on the sheltered patio area. It is worth noting that The Quiet Bite is also open for breakfast rolls. Make sure to take your reusable mugs. There is no single use plastic on site. You can buy reusable mugs from the Zero Waste Shop. It is worth a visit as they have some lovely hand made gifts.

After hot showers and packing up we headed down to Ullswater. Steve had a swim and the kids searched for fossils. I had to secretly drop their collection as we headed back to the van.
